Adult braces are becoming a more common sight, not just in big cites, but in smaller communities as well. According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), there are more than 1.2 million adults currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, and it's likely that you know a friend or colleague with braces.

In the city of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a suburb of Tulsa, adult braces are becoming a booming business for Dr. Clinton Emerson, a local orthodontist. Individuals who were afraid they'd be forced to wear the brackets and wires they remember from their childhoods are amazed to find out that there are plenty of invisible and barely-visible treatment options.

"We saw more women at first doing this," Dr. Emerson told the Broken Arrow Ledger, a local newspaper. "But, the guys dig the technology [and are getting their teeth done, too]. Adults who gave up are coming back for the smile they want."

Dr. Emerson added that lingual braces – metal braces that are attached on the tongue side of the teeth – are by far the most popular orthodontic appliance option in his practice.

In addition to technological advances, Dr. Emerson noted that many adults are getting braces because their attitudes are changing about dental health. Adults want to keep their teeth or get them properly aligned for implants rather than getting dentures. More dental insurance policies are also covering the treatment, making it more affordable.
