Over the past few months we've been offering quite a bit of specific advice about caring for orthodontic braces, particularly for what you should and should not eat during holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. As the year is coming to a close, however, we thought it would be useful to give you a few reminders about keeping your teeth and braces clean so that you start 2014 off right.
Below are some are tips for folks who wear braces:
- Be gentle – During orthodontic treatment, your teeth will be very sensitive, and your orthodontic appliances can come off if you are not careful. To prevent damage, avoid eating hard and/ or sticky foods and try to stop behaviors like teeth grinding or chewing on pens.
- Brush AND floss – Flossing is emphasized here because it is often overlooked. Metal brackets and wires create more spaces in your mouth where food and plaque can accumulate. You will need to buy specialized floss in order to clean your braces properly.
- Follow the treatment plan – No one wants to wear braces longer than necessary, so follow your orthodontist's treatment plan. Attend all of your scheduled appointments and also remember to see your general dentist regularly as well.
- Wear protective gear – If you play any contact sports, it's important that you always wear a mouth guard whenever you are engaging in these activities. Your orthodontist will be able to fit you with a device that will protect your teeth and gums.
