Tip 1: Kids Should See a Pediatric Dentist Early and Often
Adults usually schedule two routine exams with their dentist each year. Children need the same care. A child should at least see a pediatric dentist by the time they are a year old. They will receive a complete oral exam. Dentists provide guidance to parents on how to establish and maintain good oral care habits for their children. Pediatric dentists can become familiar with the child’s health and their family’s dental health history so they can provide specialized care designed for the child.
Tip 2: Teach Your Child How to Brush and Floss Properly
The latest in pediatric dentistry suggests that small children need to be shown and taught how to brush and floss right. Teach them to brush using small, circular motions, and show them how to brush along the gumline and on both sides of their teeth. Your goal is to help them be able to brush independently by about six years of age. When they are at a developmental level in which they can tie their shoes, they should be close to being able to brush independently. Flossing without parental help probably won’t happen until around 10 years of age.
Tip 3: Avoid Fruit Juices for Babies Until they Are One Year Old
Fruit juices have a lot of sugar, even though it occurs naturally. Bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar. Then, they generate acid that ends up breaking down the tooth’s enamel. Offer water, milk or unsweetened tea to help avoid the onset of cavities. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that babies under one year of age should not be offered fruit juices of any kind. This is not only to protect their teeth but also helps prevent unhealthy weight gain and other health risks associated with sugars.
Tip 4: Use Fluoride Toothpaste
The recommendations for using fluoride toothpaste have changed recently. It is now considered best to start using a fluoride toothpaste as early as possible to help prevent plaque buildup and protect your child’s teeth from decay. Fluoride toothpaste helps to eliminate bacteria that contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.
Tip 5: Ask Your Upper Eastside Kid’s Dentist About Sealants
Sometimes, it’s hard to not worry about your child being able to keep their teeth clean on their own. Dental sealants are protective barriers applied to the chewing surfaces of your child’s teeth. Sealants are placed over the rougher surfaces and pits in the molars. It cannot prevent all cavities, but it goes a long way toward preventing them from forming. It’s a quick and easy procedure and once the dental sealant is applied, kids are not even aware that it’s there.
