Anyone who has ever had orthodontic work done knows all too well what a chore eating becomes to ensure you're giving your mouth the extra care it requires.

The same can be said of adult braces. Whether you have just had them put on or recently tightened, getting braces is a new experience that comes with its own set of dietary limitations. It also tends to make your mouth a little sore for a few days after each tightening, which can make eating some food groups rather difficult.

The good news is that this is a temporary ache, and the pain is definitely worth the outcome when you are able to show off your new bright, beautiful and healthy smile. In the meantime, though, there are a few things that you can do to alleviate some of the short-term soreness while chewing with your braces on.

Here are a few tips for eating after your braces have been tightened:

Avoid Sugars: Bacteria eats sugars and starches, which means that avoiding these types of foods will reduce the impact that bad bacteria has on your teeth. If plaque builds up around the brackets of your braces, then the bacteria can feed on it until it begins to eat away the calcium of your teeth. At least while your braces are on, it is a good idea to avoid sugars and starches overall.

Cut it up: While it may be too difficult to bite into foods and rip pieces off with your teeth, cutting up pieces certainly makes it easier. Bagels, pizza and raw fruits and veggies don't need to be stricken from your diet altogether.

Eat soft foods: For the few days after you have your braces put on, it is a good idea to stick to soft foods like yogurt, jello, mashed potatoes, apple sauce and soups. Cooking fruits and vegetables for these early days is also a great way to reduce the tenderness caused by eating them raw while still retaining them in your diet.

Meats: While tougher steaks and chicken may not be feasible at first, thinner and softer meats like cold cuts and fish are a great way to keep protein in your diet.

Take it easy: Your teeth just had a tough workout and need a break. Be gentle with them for a little while so they have time to properly recover.
