Recently, the American Dental Association postulated that more than 164 million hours were lost to oral health problems and dental visits per year. But aside from the time that appointments take out of your day, maintaining healthy teeth is important for good hygiene.

If you are looking for a quick tooth check-up, here is a 60 second exam that you can give yourself:

  • Cheeks – Biting your cheek by accident can leave an uncomfortable wound. If it doesn't heal and gets infected, it can be dangerous. When checking out your mouth, make sure there are no sores or cuts.
  • Gums – Make sure your gums are healthy and pink. If you notice any brown lines in and around your gum line or between your teeth, it might be time to go to the dentist as that is a sign of tartar build up. If there is redness it could be a sign of gingivitis.
  • Teeth – Are you a tooth grinder? Some people are and they don't even know it. If you wake up with a sore jaw or have ridges around the edges of your tongue, chances are that you grind your teeth at night. To avoid harming your teeth, consult a dentist about a proper mouth guard.
  • Tongue – If your tongue's surface is coated with a white layer, it could lead to bad breath. Make sure to brush your tongue as part of your morning and nightly routine, and consult a dentist if the issue persists.
