You only get one chance to make a good first impression and you don't want to ruin that moment because you're embarrassed about how your teeth look. According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), one of the most common reasons that adults seek orthodontic treatment is to improve their self-esteem.

In a press release, Connecticut-based dentist Dr. John Iwasaki recommended that individuals take the following steps to ensure that their smiles always look great:

  • Brush regularly – You should brush and floss your teeth twice a day and try to rinse out your mouth after every meal.
  • Eat well – Limit your sugar intake and try to maintain a balanced diet. Eating well will also keep you from damaging your orthodontic appliances.
  • Start early – It's never to late to improve your smile, but if you have children it may be a good idea to start dental care as soon as possible. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that children have their first exam as soon as their first teeth appear. The AAO also suggests that kids have their first appointment with an orthodontist no later than age seven.
  • Visit your general dentist – Even if you are seeing an orthodontist regularly, you need to continue meeting with your general dentist for regular cleanings. He or she will also be on the lookout for cavities or other issues that your orthodontist may have missed.

If the idea of straightening your teeth and improving your smile has been lingering in the back of your mind, now is the time to pursue this goal. Contact a New York City Orthodontist today to schedule a free initial consultation.
