Upper East Side Kids Dentist is pleased to offer sedation for children who are highly anxious about dental work or have special needs. Dr. Shiva has special training in conscious sedation dentistry to ensure safety and comfort at every procedure.
Procedures Appropriate for Sedation Dentistry
We can provide sedation for nearly any dental procedure that makes your child feel a high degree of stress. The most common procedures where parents choose sedation dentistry for their child include:
- Dental crowns
- Dental fillings
- Root canals
Type of Sedation
We offer the following type of sedation dentistry at our clinic:
- Nitrous Oxide: Also called laughing gas, your child receives nitrous oxide by breathing it in through a mask. It contains a mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide. This is a form of conscious sedation because your child remains awake throughout the procedure. While your son or daughter can still respond to our dentist, he or she does not experience pain during the procedure. Some children don’t remember the dental visit once the nitrous oxide has worn off. The major benefits of nitrous oxide are that it takes effect immediately and wears off quickly.
Safety of Sedation Dentistry
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes sedation as a safe and effective way to ensure that children remain comfortable and free of pain during a dental procedure. We always make sure that parents understand the sedation process, including what to expect once it wears off. The choice of whether to use sedation on your child is always left to you.
