If you have braces, you’ve probably been told a countless number of times that there are certain foods that you have to stay away from including gum, caramel and popcorn. You should make sure you do your best to avoid these products because failing to do so may delay your treatment. However, did you know that certain drinks can also wreak havoc on your mouth, regardless of whether you are correcting your smile and bite using Invisalign, traditional braces or clear braces?
Experienced orthodontists will tell you that you should steer clear of the following beverages if you want you want to get the most out of your orthodontic treatment:
1) Soft drinks
Yes, it looks like during the time that you have braces, you’ll have to give up your soda addiction. Both the regular and diet versions of these beverages contain flavor additive, which are highly acidic. Non-diet soft drinks also have anywhere between 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar, which increases the chances of developing cavities. But, you shouldn’t think you are off the hook if you go the diet route. Research has demonstrated that zero calorie soft drinks ruin tooth enamel the same way regular sodas do.
2) Fruit drinks
You may think that there is nothing more natural than a tall glass of freshly pressed apple juice, but fruit beverages are known for containing countless grams of sugar. Furthermore, beverages like orange juice are, just like soda, highly acidic.
If you have any more questions about drinks you should refrain from consuming while you have braces and live in the Manhattan area, don’t hesitate to contact a New York Orthodontist like Dr. Tanya Vaysman.
