If you're an adult considering braces, you're in good company. According to Cherie Berkley of WebMD, adults now represent almost half of orthodontic patients looking to perfect their smile.
Part of the reason for the increasing number of adults getting orthodontic treatment is that braces have evolved significantly in the last 15 years. Now there are many more lightweight, comfortable and "cosmetically friendly" options available, including Invisalign.
Michael Sebastian, DDS, an orthodontist in Atlanta, tells WebMD:
"The [brackets] are smaller and we don't use all the bands or appliances that wrap all the way around [the tooth] like we used to. Now, we use bonded brackets that are a lot smaller or the clear braces that are a lot more cosmetic as far as their appearance."
Sebastian explains that the standard time for adult patients to wear braces is between 12 to 20 months.
So what are some of the other practical reasons more adults are getting braces?
As a adult, you're likely in a better position to afford braces. You also may be more aware of the benefits, both cosmetic and health, of having straight teeth.
Having straight teeth not only helps you in your personal life, but also extends to professional success. Given these valuable benefits, many adults are deciding that it's worthwhile to deal with the minor inconvenience of having braces for one to two years, to reap the advantages they afford in the long term.
