For many kids, getting braces can mark the beginning of a less than exciting rite of passage to adulthood. Fortunately, today’s braces are much different than the ones from your childhood.
Braces work faster than they did in our youth, and some children can even opt for clear braces, which are less noticeable than metal braces. Most teenagers are self-conscious and appreciate not having traditional metal braces. Upper East Side Orthodontists finds and delivers orthodontic solutions for your child who may need braces, but may be reluctant to get them.
Clear Braces or Aligners?
Clear braces are similar to metal braces, except that the material is clear or matches the tooth color. They are just as effective as metal braces. Our Manhattan dental team will be happy to help determine if your child qualifies for treatment with clear braces.
Aligners are pieces of hard plastic that fit into the mouth much like a mouth guard. An aligner can correct mild orthodontic problems. Clear aligners are nearly invisible in the mouth. You can remove the aligner when brushing and flossing, making dental hygiene much easier. However, not every orthodontic problem can be corrected with aligners, which is why we make it easy for you to learn which option is best for you.
Advantages of clear braces and aligners
The most noticeable advantage with clear braces or aligners is their appearance. Clear braces are more discreet. The wires can blend in with your teeth, allowing your braces to seamlessly ‘fit’ with your smile. Your child can look more natural in person, as well as in pictures while wearing their braces.
Because they know people are focusing on their beautiful smile (not on their braces), teenagers who wear clear braces report feeling less self-conscious, and may actually have more self-confidence.
Clear braces are also often considered to be more comfortable than traditional metal braces.
