Retainers
Retainers — The Next Step
After having braces removed or completing Invisalign™ treatment, wearing a retainer is the next step in the process.
A retainer is made of plastic, springs, and wire, and is customized to fit over the roof of your mouth. This device helps to retain the movement initiated by braces or Invisalign (hence the name) so teeth won’t shift back to their previous position.
We offer the following types of retainers:
Fixed retainers
Essix clear retainers and Hawley retainers, which are both removable
Spring aligned retainer, which is a subset of Hawley retainers
What to Expect When You Receive a Dental Retainer
Dr. Vaysman first evaluates your mouth to decide whether a retainer is appropriate. If so, she determines which type is best. She then forwards your information to our dental laboratory so technicians can begin creating your customized retainer.
When the laboratory finishes the retainer, you will be asked to come to our office for a final fitting. Dr. Vaysman will ensure the retainer functions as expected. We ask you return to our office periodically for us to ensure the retainer is performing as expected. After she clears you to stop wearing the retainer during the day, you need to only wear it at night to keep the newly aligned teeth in place.
