Upper East Side Kids Dentist is pleased to offer comprehensive orthodontic services for kids.
It surprises some parents to learn we recommend an orthodontic evaluation by around age seven. By this age, most children have their first set of molars, and we can usually make an accurate prediction about the need for braces or Invisalign retainers in the future. Children typically have their last set of molars by age 12. Since every pediatric patient is a unique individual, we can’t say when the best time is to start orthodontic treatment without first completing an evaluation.
We understand that the treatment, which is right for one child, may not be the best choice for another. After evaluating your child, we may recommend a specific type of orthodontia and begin forming a custom treatment plan. If your child wears traditional metal braces with brackets and wires, we try to make it fun by allowing him or her to change the colors at each appointment. Many children are good candidates for Invisalign, a treatment that uses customized clear plastic retainers to gently move your child’s teeth into position.
The Many Advantages of Having Straight Teeth
Initially, both parents and children seem to be most concerned about having a more attractive smile. They are not aware that the benefits of orthodontia go beyond that. Crowded and crooked teeth can be hard to keep clean, which increases the chances of developing gum disease and the problems that go with it. An overbite or underbite can lead to issues with chewing and speech. Correcting these common problems early in life means that your child has a lifetime of excellent oral health to look forward to.
