Types of Braces

 Lingual Braces in NYC

These days, everyone wants to look their best, and one of the most effective ways to keep up our appearances is to make sure that our teeth are straight. In fact, a recent survey conducted by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) indicated that more than 33 percent of people in the United States are not happy with their smile. Researchers also reported that 14 percent of these individuals believed that their teeth are keeping them from getting a better job.

A good smile not only increases your self-esteem but also helps you feel more open around other people. If you don’t like the way your teeth look, then it’s time to make a change. Begin by scheduling an appointment with award-winning New York orthodontist Dr. Tanya Vaysman and her firm, Upper Eastside Orthodontists.

Lingual braces are individualized and comfortable

Dr. Vaysman and her staff will tell you that iBraces are the only 100 percent customizable fixed appliance system in the United States today. Each bracket is made using top-quality technology and is designed to fit every single tooth in your mouth.

One of the biggest concerns that people have when orthodontics are put on their teeth is that the brackets may interfere with their speech. With lingual braces, however, you’ll find that after an initial short adjustment period, you’ll be be able to talk and eat normally.

Children’s Braces

 Why Children Need Braces

Children's braces

There are a number of reasons youngsters might need braces, one of which is a genetic predisposition to crooked teeth. If at least one parent had to wear braces, it is more likely their children will also be obliged to wear braces.

Your Upper Eastside Orthodontists team can help confirm your child’s need for braces or other orthodontic therapy.

Apart from an inherited need for braces, a child may also have overcrowded teeth, or they may overlap or be crooked. A child can also develop a bite problem from bad habits like thumb-sucking, losing baby teeth prematurely, or some form of accident or trauma.

The age at which you take your child to visit with one of our Upper East Side, New York orthodontist will depend on when you first identify the need for corrective work on their teeth. Most dentists recommend taking your child to an orthodontist for the first time around age 7.

Types of Braces

Braces work by applying steady pressure to the teeth, which encourages them to move toward a more appropriate alignment in the mouth. The traditional way of accomplishing this has been to use metal braces, accompanied by brackets, rubber bands, and wires. The brackets attach to the teeth via rubber bands and wires.  The wires are gradually tightened to bring the teeth into their proper alignment.

Newer methods of orthodontics include clear braces or white ceramic braces, which are virtually undetectable in the mouth.  There are even clear aligners that are removable and suitable for some patients. It is possible that part of your Manhattan dental team’s treatment recommendations may be the removal of one or more teeth to relieve overcrowding in the mouth, and thereby facilitate proper alignment.

While your braces are working

After braces have been installed, your child will make periodic trips to see their Manhattan orthodontist to adjust his or her braces. To complete treatment a child may wear braces for up to two years, although the exact amount of time will depend on the condition being corrected. Once the braces are removed, your child will likely wear a retainer to prevent teeth from moving back out of position.

Clear Braces

For many kids, getting braces can mark the beginning of a less than exciting rite of passage to adulthood. Fortunately, today’s braces are much different than the ones from your childhood.

Braces work faster than they did in our youth, and some children can even opt for clear braces, which are less noticeable than metal braces. Most teenagers are self-conscious and appreciate not having traditional metal braces. Upper East Side Orthodontists finds and delivers orthodontic solutions for your child who may need braces, but may be reluctant to get them.

Clear Braces or Aligners?

Clear braces are similar to metal braces, except that the material is clear or matches the tooth color. They are just as effective as metal braces. Our Manhattan dental team will be happy to help determine if your child qualifies for treatment with clear braces.

Aligners are pieces of hard plastic that fit into the mouth much like a mouth guard. An aligner can correct mild orthodontic problems. Clear aligners are nearly invisible in the mouth. You can remove the aligner when brushing and flossing, making dental hygiene much easier. However, not every orthodontic problem can be corrected with aligners, which is why we make it easy for you to learn which option is best for you.

Advantages of clear braces and aligners

The most noticeable advantage with clear braces or aligners is their appearance. Clear braces are more discreet. The wires can blend in with your teeth, allowing your braces to seamlessly ‘fit’ with your smile. Your child can look more natural in person, as well as in pictures while  wearing their braces.

Because they know people are focusing on their beautiful smile (not on their braces), teenagers who wear clear braces report feeling less self-conscious, and may actually have more self-confidence.

Clear braces are also often considered to be more comfortable than traditional metal braces.

Make an appointment today, and one of our experienced Upper East Side orthodontists, Dr. Vaysman or Dr. Jahn’Shahi will help find the right solution for your child’s orthodontic needs. Make sure to ask about the clear braces!
